IWe hadn't intended to host a Senior Citizens Project. We had to! In 1991, young local men whom we had employed to paint and decorate the homes of low-income house holds in the community made us aware of their concern for the elderly people in whose homes they were working, many of whom they described as house-bound and lonely.
The young men wouldn't listen to any response other than that we 'do something' for their elderly friends. So began the Mornington Senior Citizens Club. It still runs today, but has fluctuated wildly in size and sophistication, as opportunities for funding support have come and gone. The club was managed, in 1996, for instance, by 6 staff, and had its own centre. Now it has no staff, but the senior citizens manage and run their own club.
The Club remains a vital part of our attempt to operate a holistic' approach to community regeneration, engaging with the width of age groups and with whole family networks in the community.
